Oahu Food Guide: The 10 Ultimate Foods You MUST Eat in Oahu!

If you are planning a trip to Oahu, Hawaii and love food as much as I do, you have officially hit the jackpot! This is your ultimate guide to the absolute best dishes and local food categories you need to try on the island. Oahu is a food lover’s paradise, blending fresh Pacific seafood with incredible Asian-Hawaiian fusion and pure comfort food. Instead of just listing random restaurants, I am breaking down the essential island staples you cannot leave Hawaii without experiencing!

Whether you are craving a fresh bowl of poke, a massive plate of local garlic shrimp, or a refreshing tropical shave ice to cool down after the beach, I have got you completely covered. Pack your appetite and get ready to eat your way through paradise, dish by dish!

(Oh, and once you’ve mapped out your dream food itinerary, don’t forget to check out my other article on the Top 5 Things to Do in Oahu, Hawaii to plan the rest of your adventure!)

1. Poke

This should be a total no-brainer! If you go to Hawaii, you absolutely MUST try authentic poke (traditional cubed fish salad) as it is the absolute heart and soul of Hawaiian cuisine. Forget the assembly-line poke bowls you get back home with corn and kale — out here, it is all about the ultra-fresh, perfectly marinated fish.

There are so many incredible flavors to choose from, ranging from classic Shoyu (soy sauce) and Spicy Ahi to local favorites made with limu (seaweed) and inamona (roasted kukui nut). The best part? You can find top-tier poke everywhere, from specialized mom-and-pop shops to the local Costco and neighborhood grocery store counters!

My favorite places to get poke is Tamura’s. Believe it or not, they’re actually a liquor store!!

I know buying raw fish inside a liquor store sounds a little wild at first, but hear me out—this is the ultimate “if you know, you know” local secret! Tamura’s serves up some of the freshest, highest-quality poke on the entire island, and because it’s a hidden gem, it’s way less crowded than the tourist hot spots. Their ahi is never frozen, and they don’t pre-sauce everything, meaning you can actually taste how pristine the fish is. Plus, you can pick up a local craft beer or a great bottle of wine at the exact same time. It’s a total win-win!

Where to Get the Best Poke in 2026

  • Ono Seafood — still one of the top poke shops on the island
  • Foodland — surprisingly excellent and affordable
  • Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquors — locals love their poke counter
  • Maguro Brothers — fresh, clean flavours, now with a Waikiki location (super busy though!)

2. Shave Ice

Since the island weather is beautifully hot most days of the year, the absolute best way to cool off is with a massive, colorful dome of shave ice! But before we dive into the flavors, we have to talk about a quick local rule:

The term “Shave Ice” is actually deeply rooted in Hawaii’s plantation history and local culture. It was originally inspired by the traditional Japanese dessert kakigōri, which was brought over by Japanese immigrants in the early 1900s. When plantation workers gathered to make the dessert using hand‑shaved blocks of ice, the English translation literally became “shave ice” and the name stuck for generations.

It is such a cool reflection of Hawaii’s unique blend of cultures, and let me tell you, they have perfected it down to a science! Unlike the crunchy, chunky snow cones you get back home, authentic Hawaiian shave ice has an ultra‑fine, snow‑like texture that instantly melts on your tongue. Plus, so many places out here use real, fresh fruit syrups instead of artificial colors and chemical flavors. It tastes completely different from the mainland-style stuff, it is incredibly refreshing and bursting with genuine tropical flavor!

My Top Spots for Shave Ice

  • Matsumoto Shave Ice (North Shore): The ultimate historic legend! The lines can look intimidating, but they move with lightning speed
  • Waiola Shave Ice (Honolulu): A local favorite that has been around for decades. Their ice texture is notoriously soft and fluffy
  • Island Vintage Shave Ice (Waikiki): Perfect if you want real fruit syrups and premium toppings right in the heart of Waikiki

💡 Pro Tip: Customize Your Bowl!

To eat like a true local, you can’t just get the ice alone. You have to dress it up! Try adding these to your next order:

  • Popping Pearls & Fresh Fruit: For a burst of real tropical flavor
  • The “Snow Cap”: A sweet condensed milk drizzle over the top (highly recommend!)
  • Mochi: Chewy, bite-sized glutinous rice dumplings hidden at the bottom
  • Ice Cream: A scoop of vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream waiting for you at the very center

3. Acai Bowl

Acai Bowls, also known traditionally as Açaí na Tigela, are a classic Brazilian dish made from mashed, frozen acai palm fruit. Since it gets incredibly warm and sunny in Hawaii, locals and tourists alike have adopted this superfood treat as the ultimate refreshing breakfast or post-beach snack. Packed with antioxidants, it is such a delicious, healthy alternative to heavy ice cream or super sugary desserts!

While you can grab a decent bowl at popular spots like Eggs ‘N Things, my absolute number one favorite place on the entire island has to be The Sunrise Shack!

Originally started by a group of local surfers on the North Shore, this bright yellow, happy little shack serves up the dreamiest, thickest acai blends you will ever experience. Their bowls look like a literal work of art, loaded with crunchy hemp seed granola, fresh local bananas, strawberries, and a heavy drizzle of organic Hawaiian honey.

4. Garlic Shrimp

If you are staying in Honolulu for more than a few days, I highly recommend renting a car for a day trip to the North Shore to experience some of the absolute best garlic shrimp of your life! These Hawaiian style garlic shrimp plates come served with two big scoops of white rice and a serious amount of rich, buttery garlic sauce. They are served right out of iconic food trucks situated in lively little hubs between Hale’iwa and Kahuku. Once you see an endless lineup of hungry people and dozens of cars parked around a roadside knoll, you will know you have officially arrived!

The garlic shrimp out here was so incredibly good that my husband, Thomas, and I drove all the way out to the North Shore on two separate occasions just to try different trucks.

The most famous truck on the island is definitely Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, which is recognizable by its white exterior completely covered in signatures from visitors worldwide. While their shrimp is undeniable, I really do not think you need to stand in their extra long, grueling lineup to get a world class meal.

There are so many other incredible trucks right nearby that are just as good, if not better! For example, Honos, the amazing Korean shrimp truck parked right next to Giovanni’s, serves up a spectacularly flavorful plate without the massive wait. I say, go there instead 😙

My Top Tips for North Shore Shrimp Truck Hunting:

  • Try the Spicy Options: If you love a kick, most trucks offer a spicy version alongside their classic scampi, but be warned, Hawaiian style spicy can bring some serious heat!
  • Bring Cash and Wipes: Many of these roadside trucks are cash only, and things are going to get messy! You will definitely want wet wipes on hand after peeling all that delicious, garlicky shrimp
  • Bring Mosquito Repellent: I have no idea why but there are a LOT of mosquitoes/flies around the food truck area. Bring repellent if you don’t want them to be feasting on you while you feast on garlic shrimp!

5. Mai Tais (for the adults)

You cannot visit Hawaii without sipping on a refreshing, cold Mai Tai while watching an iconic island sunset! This legendary rum cocktail is the ultimate symbol of island relaxation, but let me tell you, the versions you get on the beaches of Oahu are on a whole different level compared to the mainland.

While a traditional 1944 recipe relies heavily on fresh lime juice, orange curaçao, and orgeat (almond syrup), the Hawaiian style version often gets a beautiful, sweet upgrade with fresh local pineapple and passion fruit juices. It’s soooo refreshing but beware!! Some of them are hella strong so one or two cocktails can get you quite tipsy or drunk! 🤣

6. Musubi

Musubi is without a doubt one of the things you HAVE to get when visiting Hawaii! Hawaiian cuisine heavily centers around Spam, so what better way of eating their national food than to enjoy it in the form of a fresh, warm musubi? 🙂

In one quick sentence, musubi is essentially a juicy slice of grilled Spam on top of a packed block of white rice, wrapped up neatly in seaweed. It is the ultimate local comfort food and makes for the most perfect, portable snack to pack along for a beach day or a hike.

There are so many fantastic variations of musubi out there to keep things interesting. For example, I got mine with creamy avocado and crispy bacon, which was absolutely delicious! You can find many other incredible combinations that feature unique ingredients like egg, crunchy cucumber, and even savory unagi (eel).

Where to Find the Best Musubi:

  • Musubi Cafe Iyasume: I highly recommend checking out this legendary spot located right in Waikiki. They specialize entirely in musubi and hand-craft them fresh all day long, making it the perfect place to try all the different fun flavor combinations
  • 7-Eleven Hawaii: This is a major insider secret! While 7-Eleven on the mainland might not be a food destination, 7-Eleven in Hawaii is a whole different beast. Their warmer cases are constantly stocked with locally loved, incredibly tasty Spam musubis that are perfect for a quick, cheap bite on the run

7. Malasadas

If you want to experience the ultimate Hawaiian sweet treat, you absolutely have to try a fresh, hot malasada! Brought over to the islands by Portuguese immigrants in the late 1800s, these incredible confections have become a legendary staple of local food culture.

In case you have never had one before, a malasada is essentially a Portuguese yeast donut without a hole. They are fried to golden perfection so they are delightfully crispy on the outside, incredibly fluffy and airy on the inside, and rolled in plenty of sugar. Many spots also offer them packed with tropical fillings like coconut, guava, and passion fruit!

ANNDDD you cannot talk about malasadas without visiting the world-famous Leonard’s Bakery in Honolulu! They have been frying up the absolute best malasadas on the island since 1952. Look for their iconic bright pink neon sign and grab a dozen in their famous pink box. Trust me, you will want to eat them while they are still warm!

8. Loco Moco

This is a dish I ALWAYS get while in Hawaii 🙂 A traditional Loco Moco consists of a bed of fluffy white rice topped with a juicy, grilled beef hamburger patty, smothered in rich brown gravy, and crowned with a fried egg. I don’t know what it is about this combination but it’s friggin delicious and you can’t leave Hawaii or Oahu without giving it a try!

Even though Loco Mocos usually consist of white rice, beef patty, an egg, and brown gravy. Nowadays, you can find many variations of this dish involving spam, chili, pork, kalua pork, shrimp, teriyaki chicken, and more. Hawaiian cuisine is always about comfort and Loco Moco doesn’t get any more comforting than that.

9. Kalua Pork

If you want to experience a true piece of Hawaiian history on your plate, you have to try Kalua Pork! Traditionally, this dish is made by slow-roasting a whole pig in an imu (an underground oven layered with hot volcanic rocks and banana leaves). The result is incredibly juicy, smoky, pull-apart shredded pork that is simply seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt. It is usually served alongside cabbage and a scoop of rice as part of a classic plate lunch, and it is pure comfort food heaven!

Where to get it:

  • Helena’s Hawaiian Food is a multi-generational, James Beard Award-winning landmark in Honolulu that serves the most authentic Kalua pork on the island. Highway Inn in Kaka’ako is another phenomenal spot to try it!
  • Any Luau on Oahu – if you sign up for a luau in Oahu, you will undoubtedly be served kalua pork as one of the buffet dishes!
  • Highway Inn: Located right in the trendy Kaka’ako neighborhood, this is a fantastic, welcoming spot to try a traditional Hawaiian combo plate featuring Kalua pork alongside other island staples like lomi salmon and poi

10. Ube EVERYTHING!

You absolutely cannot leave Hawaii without indulging in the ube craze! Ube is a bright purple sweet yam originating from the Philippines, and it has taken the Hawaiian dessert and cafe scene completely by storm. It has a wonderfully unique, sweet, and nutty flavor profile that tastes like a magical blend of vanilla, pistachio, and white chocolate. Aside from being incredibly delicious, its gorgeous purple color makes every single item totally Instagram-worthy!

One of my absolute favourite ways to kickstart an island morning is with the stunning Iced Ube Latte from Honolulu Coffee Company.

They pour a rich, velvety purple ube-infused milk base and top it off with a espresso shot. When it is layered in the cup, it looks super beautiful and the flavour just screams Hawaii. I think I had this 3 times in a week during my trip to Oahu! There’s a location directly inside the lobby of Prince Waikiki so it was just way too convenient. 🤣

You can truly find inclusions of ube in everything from burger buns, desserts, to drinks! Below are just a fraction of ube items during my trip.
