Deadlock Soul Urn Explained: How to Use & Steal It (2026)

Last updated: June 3, 2026

The Soul Urn is the objective that turns a losing game around — and the one most new players ignore until it's too late. Valve reworked it heavily in May 2026 into a brawling, comeback-focused objective, so a lot of older guides are flat-out wrong now. If you want the current rules, bookmark them here — this is how the Urn actually works today.

Quick answer: A vessel spawns mid-map; melee it to pick it up, carry it to the side-lane bridge drop-off, and hold it through a deposit timer for a big chunk of team souls and buffs. The enemy can heavy-melee it during deposit to steal it.

How it works now

  • Spawn: the first Urn arrives around 12 minutes, then roughly every 6 minutes, descending for a few seconds before it can be grabbed.
  • Pick up: just melee the Urn — no standing-still channel anymore.
  • Deposit: carry it to the drop-off under the side-lane bridge (note: it moved here in late May 2026; it's not the center bridge), then protect it through a timer.
  • Timers: the team that's behind deposits fastest (~5s), neutral ~10s, the team that's ahead slowest (~15s).

Rewards

  • A big chunk of team souls (scaling with game time), split across the team and granted instantly.
  • The carrier gets a bonus cut, and the depositor gets the lion's share of Golden Statue buffs.
  • While a behind team carries it, they get a resist aura nearby — it's built as a comeback tool.
⚠ You can steal it. During the deposit phase, an enemy heavy-melees the Urn to flip it to their team (each contest adds time). Don't fight for the Urn en route — collapse on the drop-off and time your melee.

Strategy

  • Behind? Prioritize it. It spawns near your jungle, deposits fastest, and gives the resist aura — your best comeback.
  • Ahead? Your timer is longest and you get no aura, so only contest if you can win the fight; otherwise just deny by meleeing during their deposit.
  • Push your lanes before grouping for it so you're not counter-pushed while distracted.
🎮 Dota 2 players: think of it as a deliver-it objective crossed with a comeback bounty — closest to escorting a runic objective, but it's contested at the drop-off like an Aegis grab.

The Urn was tuned several times in late May 2026 — exact timers and numbers are a June 2026 snapshot; check the live patch if you're optimizing around it.
