McDonald’s Canada – #CreateYourTasteCa Build Your Own Burger

Ever since 2015, I’ve heard about this restaurant concept that McDonald’s is introducing to the North American market. I know they wanted to create a more elevated dining environment for its diners, and that they were rolling these custom “Build Your Own” burger machines at test locations, but I didn’t know how legit these burgers would be. I gave it a try today because I noticed a location near me finally has this rolled out, and man was I surprised.

At the location I went to, there were two machines specifically for this “Create Your Taste” campaign. When Cupcake and I walked up to it, a manager immediately came by to help us use the machine. I guess they need to do that until everyone gets used to using it.

At the machine, you have the option of ordering and paying for other items as well so you’re not just limited to building your own burger.

The only cheese that is free is the Classic American one. They do have other ones for an added cost like Monterey Jack Jalapeno, Natural Cheddar, Swiss, and Crumbled Blue Cheese.

Their sauces are unlimited and you can choose as many as you want! I chose the Garlic Aioli and Sriracha Sauce.

So with the toppings, I thought the classic ones like red onions, lettuce, and tomato would be free but apparently they were not. They were about $0.25-$0.50 per item which isn’t bad but it kinda sucked to have to pay twenty five cents for a slice of tomato. I ended up choosing the caramelized onions (free), grilled mushrooms (+$0.49), lettuce (+$0.25), and tomato ($0.25).

If you want to be all fancy you can even add extra patties or bacon strips/pieces.

My custom built #CreateYourTasteCa burger ended up costing me $8.90 and it came with free fries and a drink because of the promotion right now.

It doesn’t look like much because I didn’t pound it with crazy toppings and sauces but let me tell you, this burger friggin impressed the hell out of me. I could tell the difference in quality just by eating the patty itself and the bun was top notch. I love buttery brioche buns and this sesame one didn’t disappoint. Also, you know how people rate how good the burger is by the amount of juice that runs down your hands? Well, this burger made me use close to 5 napkins. That’s how juicy and saucey it was. I’ll leave it at that.

Cupcake chose the brioche bun as well with natural cheddar cheese, big mac sauce, mayo, bacon, grilled onions, tomato, and sliced jalapenos. He inhaled the burger in 5 minutes so it must have been good.

All in all, I actually think McDonald’s hit it out of the park with this. If the quality and taste of the Build-Your-Own burger stays consistent (and I WILL be going back for more of these in the future), I think this can easily be a permanent and successful part of the McDonald’s program moving forward.
