Super Easy Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Recipe

During the holidays, it’s hard not to want to snuggle up to a piping cup of hot chocolate while watching your favourite Netflix show near the fireplace. I recently had an urge to make real hot chocolate at home (crazy right? :D). No, not the powdered kind. Real hot chocolate made from melting chocolate and combining it with milk!

Surprisingly, it was a lot easier than I thought! And the result was so tasty I might just never go back to the powdered stuff again. Literally all you have to do when making hot chocolate is to combine milk….and chocolate! Seriously, that is it. Knowing that I don’t know how anyone can go back.

For my recipe, I used Lindt Sea Salt Dark Chocolate and I encourage those who like their hot chocolate slightly less sweet to use chopped dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet or obviously white chocolate. Plus, if you happen to have salted caramel or just regular caramel on hand, that little caramel topping on top can be enough to sweeten the whole drink.

To make some delicious salted caramel hot chocolate, just follow my super simple steps!

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

1/2 cup chopped up Lindt Sea Salt Dark Chocolate
2 cups milk (I used 1% and it turned out great)
Salted Caramel topping (optional)

In a medium pot over medium heat, add chocolate and milk. Heat mixture while stirring constantly. Do not let the mixture boil. Once mixture is hot and chocolate has melted, use a whisk to froth the chocolate for an additional few minutes to make sure you achieve a smooth consistency and all lumps have dissolved. Pour into cups to serve. Add milk froth (if you have a milk frother – I used my Nespresso frother) and lightly drizzle on the salted caramel topping.

Depending on what you like, you can substitute the salted caramel topping with other flavours to make your own flavor combinations! Here are some suggestions: cinnamon (for Cinnamon Hot Chocolate), peppermint extract (for Peppermint Hot Chocolate), matcha powder (for Matcha Hot Chocolate – but use white chocolate so the Matcha colour shows through).
