What To Eat When Travelling With BC Ferries
As a Vancouverite for over 20 years, I’m a little ashamed to say I’ve only ridden the BC Ferries twice. Once with my family, and once with my elementary school class. I recently was given the opportunity to ride the BC Ferries again after finding out about my press trip to Comox Valley to cover the BC Seafood Festival 2018.
I went with my good friend Roanna (Foodiegramca) and we boarded BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Duke Point. After arriving at Duke Point, we were going to have to drive another hour and a half to get to Courtenay.
If you ever do travel by BC Ferries, I’d recommend getting out of your car, and going up to the deck to experience the breathtaking views as you sail across the water. At times, you may even spot a sea lion or a whale!
Clearly having too much fun enjoying the breeze and watching the view. 😉
Because my ferry was quite small, it didn’t have the vast selection of food options that I’m sure the other ferries have (like the ones going to Victoria). However, it still had a full service White Spot so I was really happy with that.
In addition to the White Spot menu, the Coastal Cafe has a selection of cold and hot beverages, wraps and sandwiches by Bread Garden, and baked goods.
You can also get Haagen Daz ice-cream or soft serve (they have the choco/vanilla twist flavour!!).
A nice view to enjoy your meal during this 2 hour trip.
The food prices are quite reasonable and it is not too far off from what you’d pay at a regular White Spot restaurant. My two burger meals plus the signature clam chowder came up to $30.
Just as a tip, if you are planning to travel with your car aboard the ferry, you must either 1) reserve a spot online and arrive 1 hour early from time of departure, or 2) go even earlier and wait to get on the next available ferry (no promises that you will). We left Comox Valley on Father’s Day and did not have a reservation. Our ferry was at 3:15 and we arrived at 1:55pm. When we paid and drove in line, they broadcasted to everyone that the ferry was already 99% full! So make sure you go early or else you’re going to have to be okay waiting another 2 hours for the next ferry.
Found a stall selling refreshing Screamers (slush + soft serve) at the Duke Point Ferry Terminal. Highly recommend especially if you’re waiting on a hot day!
