I have a treat for you – a lazy and easy Shakshuka recipe (featuring a SECRET INGREDIENT) that’s perfect for a leisurely Sunday brunch. Can you guess what the secret ingredient is? It’s Salsa! Salsa adds the instant depth, acidity, heat, and seasoning to this dish.
The best part? It comes together in a mere 10 minutes or less. If you love brunch and also enjoy lazy weekends, this will become favorite for lazy weekends.
What is Shakshuka?
This dish originated in North Africa and the Middle East and is usually eaten as breakfast but it also works for any other meal in the day!
Core ingredients include tomatoes, eggs, and a variety of spices but also often includes bell peppers, onions, garlic, and chili peppers
Shakshuka is often served with crusty bread, pita, or challah for dipping and sopping up the flavourful sauce
It has gained popularity worldwide in recent years as a trendy and flavorful brunch option so often, you’ll see it at many brunch restaurants
Why is Shakshuka so delicious?
Shakshuka boasts a delightful combination of flavors and textures that make it an irresistible dish for brunch or any meal. Plus, it’s also a visually appealing meal!
Uses Vibrant Ingredients: Ripe grape tomatoes burst with flavor, and creates a vibrant and tangy base for the Shakshuka
Customizable Veggies: You can use any leftover vegetables in your fridge, so it’s a perfect clean-your-fridge dish!
The Secret Ingredient – Salsa! Salsa brings a zesty kick and depth of flavor with very little need for more seasoning
Soft Poached Eggs: Nestled within the tomato mixture, the soft poached eggs provide a creamy, velvety sauce
Crusty Bread: The perfect vehicle for sopping up the saucy goodness, adding a satisfying crunch to each bite! Pita bread and other breads also work well with this dish
Got Leftovers?
It’s best eaten immediately but if you do have leftovers, they store perfectly well in the fridge for 2-3 days. Just microwave it to hit it up and it’s ready to be eaten with bread again!
Secret Ingredient: SALSA!
The reason why Salsa is the magical secret ingredient is because it provides an intense depth of flavour that really brings out the tomatoey and herby flavours of the dish without having to do a lot of work. Salsa traditionally contains a medley of tomatoes, onions, peppers, along with a lot of spices (and sodium for that matter) so a little goes a long way. Just adding 1/4 or 1/3 of a cup is enough to flavour your whole Shakshuka dish. I hope you give this hack a try!

This easy 10 minute or less Shakshuka recipe uses a little hack and secret ingredient that will blow your mind!
1cupkaleor use other leftover veggies in the fridge
1/2cuponionchopped
2 eggs
1/3cupsalsa
1/3cupwater
saltto taste
pepperto taste
1/2crusty baguette
1/2tbspchopped parsleyoptional
1 tbspextra virgin olive oil
Equipment
1 non-stick pan
Method
Add oil to a non-stick skillet and turn heat to medium low.
When the pan is hot, add your onions and kale (or whatever leftover veggies you have on hand).
Saute for 1 minute until slightly wilted and add in your chopped grape tomatoes.
Cover the pan with a lid and let it cook on medium low for 3-5 minutes.
Uncover and add in your salsa and water. Stir until combined and put the lid back on.
Turn heat to low and simmer for another 3-5 minutes or until all the tomatoes have released their juices and the mixture is melding together.
Make two wells in the mixture with a spoon or spatula and crack one egg in each well.
Season salt and pepper to taste. The salsa will have given it a lot of flavour already so start small and add more once you've tasted it!
Cover the lid and let eggs poach until it is at your desired doneness. I like to keep mine soft poached so the egg yolk is still runny but the whites are set.
Serve with fresh crusty baguette and enjoy! Make sure to dip the bread in the runny egg yolk for maximum deliciousness!
And there you have it – a lazy easy Shakshuka that will elevate your Sunday brunch to a whole new level! The combination of ripe tomatoes, flavorful veggies, and that unexpected twist of salsa creates a symphony of flavours that’s simply irresistible. So, why wait? Head to the kitchen and whip up this dish in no time.
