Guu Otokomae- Ahi Tuna Steak Steals The Show!
If you read my earlier post on Ebisu in Richmond, you may know that Meta Knight challenged me to a Yakiudon
duel! He said Guu Otokomae serves the best yakiudon and thus surpasses the
Mentaiko Yakiudon from Ebisu which I really liked.
So… we literally went to Guu Otokomae the day after trying
the yakiudon at Ebisu in Richmond because we wanted some quick eats before
heading to the Canucks game against Washington (btw, ridiculously awesome
game!).

Their drink menu really intrigued me, especially the ones
from the “Jump Around Cocktail” section. Maybe I’ll try it out on my next
visit.

We ordered the Ebi
Mayo ($7.80) and it came with five pieces of deep fried prawns smothered in
spicy mayo. I liked the fact that the prawns were very fresh and plump, but
thought it was way over-battered.

The prawns were so crispy that both Meta Knight and I ate
the tails as well. If you haven’t tried it before, try it once! I thought it
was weird to eat the tail until a few months ago and now I love it. 😛

Meta Knight highly recommended the Japanese Style Ahi Tuna Steak ($8.50) and it definitely didn’t
disappoint. The tuna steak was served with a green salad, garlic chips, two
mini tomatoes, and green onions.

The tuna was perfectly seared and I loved the marinade/sauce
that it was cooked in because it gave the tuna so much flavour. This is a
winning dish!

And ladies and gentlemen…. the dish we came for, Guu’s Yakiudon ($7.50)! This yakiudon contains “pan-fried udon with beef, green onions, and mushrooms topped
with dried bonito flakes and dried seaweed”. I expected it to be very delicious
and it sure was. I don’t know if I like this necessarily more than Ebisu’s, but
I do like the fact that this udon was more saucey than the other one. Guu’s
yakiudon is also cheaper but smaller in comparison to Ebisu’s. So all in all, I’d
say it is pretty much a tie. 😛 Ebisu’s yakiudon is more savoury and heavy,
while Guu’s yakiudon is lighter in flavour so it’s really up to
personal preference.

Based on these reasons:
- right next to Waterfront station (less than one min walk)
- Guu’s Yakiudon and Ahi Tuna Steak = thumbs up!
- relaxed environment, seats are not super comfortable though
- unique and neon looking cocktails
