Atlas Steak and Fish (Dine Out Vancouver) – Flaming Baked Alaska and More!
ATLAS Steak + Fish opened one year ago inside the Delta Hotels in Burnaby and I had the pleasure of trying them out during their dry run process as well as during their grand opening/one year anniversary. Before this restaurant opened, I never visited Delta Hotels or the Grand Villa Casino! But now, it seems like I’m going back at least a couple of times a year!
This year (2009), they’re participating in the Dine Out Vancouver Festival with their $45 three course menu.
Whenever you come, you gotta have their pillowy and delicious complimentary bread. It’s served with a blue cheese butter. I would say, even if you detest blue cheese, give it a try because it’s not as pungent as you may expect.
Their DOV menu comes with an amuse bouche (a one biter before the start of the meal). Ours was prosciutto with a honeydew ball and mustard.
Their Caesar Salad is usually prepared tableside (which is nice as it’s a pretty fun side show) but the caesar salad for DOV will be prepared inside the kitchen instead. It’s understandable since the restaurant will be packed and it’ll be near impossible to do this tableside for every patron wanting it. All in all, the salad is not a bad option but it’s looks and tastes pretty standard.
I didn’t get a chance to taste this Smoked Tomato Bisque but it looked really delicious! I heard from the people who ordered it say it was really good so I would recommend this as a great vegetarian appy.
Now this is appetizer you should get if you love meat. It’s the Beef Carpaccio and it is not on their regular menu. It’s served with charcoal brioche, arugula, pickled shimeji mushrooms, and parmesan. This one is definitely a home run and is absolutely delicious!
Their Josper Grilled Salmon Steak is served with a warm potato salad, arugula, and chimichurri. The protein is quite thick and people thought it tasted pretty good.
Their vegetarian entree option is the Josper Grilled Celeriac ‘Steak’ which is basically grilled ‘steaks’ of celery root. While this may not sound like the most appealing option because it’s all veg, I heard it’s incredibly flavourful and a ton of people preferred this over the other two meat entrees! If you’re adventurous, go try this out!
I opted for the 14oz West Coast Cut Certified Angus Beef Striploin Steak (+$12 upgrade). It’s served with the same warm potato salad, arugula salad, and chimichurri as the salmon. All in all I thought this was pretty good, though I feel like it was missing a bit of the flavour and umami I was hoping for. When we came for the media preview, a few of us did mention it so hopefully they will be more generous with the seasoning once DOV actually starts!
Look at that! A beautiful medium rare.
Dessert funnily enough was my favourite course of the night. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with any of the three options. If you’re wanting a photo for the gram, go with the Baked Alaska (+$4 per person). π They spray the meringue with some type of alcohol and light it up for you and your guests to go “oooo” and “ahhh”.
Inside the meringue is a layer of sour lemon sorbet, raspberry coconut ice-cream, and an orange vanilla cake.
Their Vanilla Cheesecake definitely does not look or taste like your average NY Cheesecake. This one is on a brown sugar shortbread and inside is a dolce de leche sauce which will flow down when you get to the middle. As well, it comes with raspberry gel and a few candied orange zests.
This was my favourite dessert and it is called Vietnamese Coffee Parfait. It has an espresso chocolate mousse, dark chocolate brownie, coffee jelly, condense milk ice-cream, coconut biscotti, cocoa nibs, and bailey’s irish cream. If you enjoy having a cup of coffee or a small espresso after a large meal, then you will really enjoy this. It’s the perfect way to cap off a meal (in my opinion), and the flavours were all on point.
If you haven’t made reservations for DOV yet, make sure you get on it because spots are quickly filling up! Click here to view ATLAS Steak + Fish’s DOV menu and here to see my top restaurant picks for DOV 2019! ΡΠ½Π΄Π΅ΠΊΡ
