SPUD Product Review – Trying Out the the Gluten-Free Weekly Staples Box

You know how sometimes you get home from work and you’re super tired, but you know you don’t have any food in your fridge and you can’t be bothered to get take out? I’m like that all the time. For the past year or two, I repeatedly heard about this company called Spud that tries to help people by delivering local, organic, and healthy groceries right to your doorstep.

I gave the Spud Gluten Free Weekly Staples Box a try last week and I want to tell you about my experience! The Weekly Staples Box as you can guess, provide about a week’s worth of fruits, veggies, bread, juice, milk so all of your fridge staples are stocked without you ever having to leave the house. In my box, I got Almond Milk, 2 Organic Pears, Happy Planet Juice, 1 dozen Large Organic Eggs, Organic Lettuce, Organic Kale, Organic Black Kale, Gluten Free bread, Organic Carrots, Organic Broccoli, Organic Bananas, 2 Organic Avocados, Hardbite Chips, and 2 Organic Gala Apples.

Even though most items looked pretty normal and regular, I really enjoyed seeing these organic carrots with stems on because I’ve never had carrots like these! The carrots were oddly shaped (how they should be), and their stems were triple the length of the carrots! I actually ended up finely chopping the stems and using it as parsley for my Lemon Herb Quinoa.

The avocados were very big and in perfect condition when it arrived, something I was a little weary of considering how easily they ripe, and how delicate they are when they’re soft.

I personally have never tried black kale before so I was ecstatic to see this in my box. I imagine one of the reasons why people like Spud so much is because they’re able to try different local produce that’s usually outside of their comfort zone. I haven’t figured out what to make with this black kale so if you have any suggestions please let me know!

Last but not least are the staples. I didn’t include the Gluten Free bread because I sadly started eating it before I took these pictures. Nevertheless, I want to call out a pretty cool feature. On the Spud website, you get quite a bit of flexibility with the chips, bread, dairy, and juice.  So you can switch the Almond Milk to Soy Milk or Coconut Milk, the bread you can switch between brands, and for the Happy Planet Juice, you can choose from 3 different flavours.

All in all, I thought Spud did a great job of delivering everything in a timely manner, straight to my apartment door, and everything in perfect condition. The one thing I would caution is that it creates quite a bit of waste if you order it as a one-time thing because it comes in cardboard boxes and ice packs instead of everything in a giant tupperware (which is what you’d get if you get it on a regular basis).
